Overview
Despite a recent interface update with new features, the 500px mobile app was experiencing a decline in download rates. To address this, I redesigned the full set of App Store and Google Play screens, creating a more compelling, informative, and visually engaging presentation of the app’s core value and functionality.
The goal was to increase conversions by showcasing the platform’s strengths through clear messaging, strong visual hierarchy, and photography-driven layouts.
My Contribution
1. Visual Direction & Concept Development
Created a refreshed visual direction that balanced brand clarity, feature education, and photography-first storytelling.
Used the 500px brand color sparingly to highlight key messages and value propositions without overwhelming the user.
Ensured the actual UI remained the focal point of each screen, aligning with App Store and Google Play guidelines.
2. Screen Design for App Store & Google Play
Designed a complete set of storefront visuals including:
Feature explanation screens
UI showcase and walk-through screens
Highlighted benefits such as discovery, licensing, and community features
Photography-led visuals to communicate 500px’s core service
Leveraged high-quality images from 500px photographers to emphasize the beauty and diversity of the platform’s content.
3. Conversion-Focused Strategy
Conducted competitive research to understand visual patterns that drive engagement in photography and social creative apps.
Established a structured hierarchy so users could quickly understand what the app offers at a glance.
Crafted messaging and layouts that support clear storytelling and increase trust in the product.
Outcome
The redesigned storefront screens led to an increase in app interest and conversion.
Within just two weeks, the 500px app saw:
+1% increase in download rate
8,000 additional downloads
These results validated the power of clear visuals, strong UI representation, and photography-driven storytelling in attracting new users.
