This redesigned book cover for Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper visualizes the psychological tension at the heart of the story. As an avid reader, I’ve always been drawn to narratives rich with symbolism, and this novella has long been one of my favourites for its layered storytelling and emotional depth.
The concept highlights the protagonist’s sense of confinement and the disturbing, torn yellow wallpaper that begins to haunt her. The prison-bar motif symbolizes the physical and psychological restrictions imposed by her doctor husband, while the hand-written typeface reflects her suppressed desire to write and express herself — a detail that resonates deeply with me.
This piece was recognized with an Indigo Bronze Award in 2021.
